The sound of a door banging from above and Headmaster Tom has hold of Emma's left arm and is urging her down the steep stone cellar steps. Purposefully he leads her to the centre of the cellar and tells her to put her hands on the wall and bend down. She already has a bare bottom that her school blouse does not cover. In case she doesn't know why she's in trouble - he tells her. Twice before she has come home late and been warned that there would be no more warnings. Now she has come home late yet again, so there will be no more warnings for sure - she is about to be punished. He brings the large wooden paddle down hard on her poor bottom. Apart from a squeal of pain she knows better than to move out of position. After about ten strokes of the paddle, he asks her for an apology. She gives it to him, loud and clear. Then telling her to stay in position for ten minutes and not move an inch. He promises to come for her when the time is up. Balancing the paddle on her back, so making certain she can't move without dislodging it, he leaves.
